Joe Carson
About Joe
Joe Carson is a mechanical engineer and Navy veteran from Brooklyn, New York. He served on a nuclear submarine and later worked in the private sector before joining the Department of Energy (DOE) in 1990. Joe took two oaths in his life, one to defend his country, and another as a licensed Professional Engineer to protect public safety. He’s spent more than 30 years honoring those promises, even when it cost him personally.
What He Saw
In 1991, just a year after joining the DOE, Joe blew the whistle. He discovered the agency was hiring expensive outside consultants to do the jobs of federal employees, a misuse of taxpayer money that also created serious safety issues at a nuclear facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. When Joe reported these problems, DOE retaliated. They stripped him of key duties, moved him out of state, and issued formal warnings, all in an attempt to silence him. The stress affected his health, finances, and family life, but he kept pushing for the truth to come out.
