Dr. Robert Bauchwitz
Dr. Robert Bauchwitz is a medical doctor and molecular biologist who has dedicated his career to scientific integrity. In the 1990s, he worked in elite academic labs and later became a certified fraud examiner and paralegal, committed to helping others stand up against misconduct in science and government. Like many whistleblowers, Robert didn’t set out to challenge the system; he simply believed that evidence-based truth and accountability mattered.
What He Saw
Robert was the plaintiff-relator in a biomedical scientific fraud federal False Claims case involving millions of dollars in grant fraud. He was first contacted by a science journalist regarding concerns about work performed in a lab where Robert had once been a graduate student. The journalist then connected Robert and his insider information to a federal agency that had already been investigating related misconduct.
Just weeks after Robert began collaborating with the agency to further investigate the suspected fraud, his faculty appointment at Columbia University was removed without explanation. The concerns he raised along with those of the federal agency about fraudulent grant submissions by a professor at Cornell University and a former graduate student of that professor, were validated through discovery in the case. However, the scope of the case was limited, which made full resolution difficult and left much of the misconduct unaddressed in a formal legal context.
