Dr. Selene Hernandez Ruiz

Dr. Selene Hernandez Ruiz was born in Mexico and immigrated to the United States during high school, bringing a perspective shaped by both cultures and a deep commitment to public service. A scientist, public-sector executive, and organizational transformation leader, she has led multimillion-dollar scientific and operational programs focused on environmental and public health.

Throughout her career, Selene has focused on optimizing systems, driving innovation, strengthening quality and scientific integrity, and building the scientific foundation needed to address complex environmental and public health challenges. Her leadership is grounded in integrity, accountability, and the courage to speak truth to power. She believes meaningful improvement requires the willingness to identify what is not working, challenge established practices when warranted, and create environments where difficult messages can be heard and acted upon.

Selene was appointed to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Science Advisory Board where she contributed scientific expertise to issues of national environmental significance, including the Contaminant Candidate List, emerging contaminants such as PFAS, and Environmental Justice frameworks. She also serves on the SETAC Board of Directors, contributing to the advancement of environmental science and science-informed decision-making.

Throughout her career, Selene has mentored students and early-career professionals and collaborated with nationally recognized scientists and experts on consequential environmental challenges. She is particularly committed to developing the next generation of scientists and environmental health leaders.

It is an honor for Selene to serve on the Board of Directors of Whistleblowers of America (WoA). She brings to WoA her scientific expertise, public-sector leadership experience, commitment to integrity, and firsthand understanding of the importance of creating environments where people can raise concerns and challenge established practices without fear of retaliation.

Through WoA, Selene is committed to advancing evidence-based research and practical tools that educate employees, managers, and government leaders and promote healthier, more accountable organizations.

For Selene, the goal extends beyond supporting individual whistleblowers. It is about building institutions where speaking up can lead to accountability, learning, correction, and meaningful improvement—for the benefit of society.
